Cleaning silver? Tips to properly clean and polish your silver

Does your silver look dirty and is it time to polish it? Whether it concerns silver jewelry such as a necklace or bracelet, silver cutlery or other silver-plated ornaments or utensils. Silver is at its best when it is well polished. But what is the easiest way to do this and what should you not do? In this article you can read some ways to safely clean and polish your valuable silver. But also how you can prevent it from getting dirty.

Why does silver discolor?
Over time, silver will always discolor, but why exactly? Silver, and therefore also silver jewelry, for example, is blackened by sulphur. Sulfur is in the air and occurs in other substances.

When sulfur and silver come into contact with each other, a chemical reaction occurs. This forms a black layer on the silver. You can compare this to rust on iron.

Materials that contain a lot of sulfur include wool, perfume and eggs. In addition to discoloration, daily use ensures that the jewelry or objects can become dirty. This makes them less beautiful. But of course it's not that hygienic either.
