Herbal remedies for toenail fungus

 Herbal remedies for toenail fungus

A toenail fungal infection occurs due to fungi attacking one or more of your nails. It usually begins with either a white or yellow spot under the toenail, according to MayoClinic.com. As the infection spreads, however, you will notice symptoms of discoloration, thickening and wilting edges. Not only is toenail fungus ugly, it can also be painful. Using herbal remedies is a natural alternative to chemicals to ward off an infection.

Tea tree

Tea tree oil is one of the most recommended and effective herbal remedies for treating fungal infections in both nails and skin, according to Barbara Close in her book "Clean Skin." Tea tree essential oil contains several components, including the turpentine cineole, pine and cymene, the author's notes. These compounds provide tea trees with their antimicrobial properties, which help prevent secondary bacterial infections as well as the fight against fungal infection. Close recommend with 15 drops of tea tree essential oil and apply directly on infected toenails three to four times a day.

Thyme

Thyme contains thymol and its odor eliminates fungi, viruses and bacteria, according to Frank Hoffmann and Martin Manning in their book "Herbal Medicine and Botanical Medical Fads." Thyme essential oil helps fight nail fungus infections, athlete's foot and yeast infections. You can also do a nail soak with moistened fresh thyme and boiling water to gather equivalent results, the authors note. If you use an essential oil, the authors suggest applying 10 drops directly to the infected toenail five times a day.

Oregano

Oregano can help improve toenail fungal infections from 40 to 50 percent within the first week of application, according to James Meschino in his book "Wrinkle-Free Zone." Oregano oils, such as tea tree and thyme oils, penetrate the nail and nail bed to stop the fungus from thriving. The author suggests applying oregano ointment twice daily on the nail bed and affected skin for at least four weeks.
